Is being a Vet definitely for me?

Is being a vet definitely for me?

You may think this is an odd question to find on this website, but it is certainly one you should ask yourself, even during your degree.

If you have considered becoming a vet, your passion for animals will be obvious, but you will also know that there is a lot of hard work ahead, a lot of patience needed and full dedication to what you have chosen as a career.

During your education, you may have told friends and teachers that you like animals, and they may have automatically asked 'so, you want to become a vet, then?'. Subconsciously this may have led you along this path. But, there are other careers within the vet industry and other animal health professions you should consider before making your final decision. Here are just a few examples:

Veterinary Nurse

A veterinary nurse position allows your love for animals to be demonstrated through administering treatments to those in your care and permits the closeness associated with being a vet through the undertaking of nursing duties on a daily basis. You will also be able to get to know the patient's owners. National charities and organisations, such as the RSCPA, regularly advertise Veterinary Nurse vacancies.

Pharmaceutical opportunities

If you are to complete a veterinary science degree, but then decide that being a vet is not for you, you may consider a career in the research and development of food and drug expansion. An affiliation for animals will clearly attract you to firms dealing with animal-related products and will allow you to combine your passion for both animals and scientific research.

Teacher

Your passion for nature and, in particular, animals could lead you to inspiring others. At either primary or secondary level, your degree could enable you to become a teacher, allowing you to share your knowledge through educating young people, bringing them closer to nature and animals and ensuring they secure a qualification in one of the core subjects on the national curriculum.

Ultimately, should you decide to not become a vet, your degree - not to mention your passion for the subject and scientific understanding - will hold you in good stead for whichever career you do decide to undertake.

Why a little confidence in the hands of a Newcastle fan can be a dangerous thing
Looking at my check list, the heart is starting to rule the head. I'm beginning to think 'what if?'

A 6-0 thumping? Check.
A winnable quarter-final tie against a struggling Premier League team? Check.
Goals seemingly coming from all positions of the park? Check.
As far as the EFL Cup is concerned, Newcastle fans could be forgiven for starting – just starting, mind you – to think that a trip down Wembley Way could be on the cards.
Allow me to introduce myself. I’m one of those fans who will go out of his way to say he won’t get his hopes up, but even now, looking at the check list at the top of this article, my heart is starting to rule my head. I’m beginning to think ‘what if?’
What if we catch Hull on one of their iffy days and get through?
What then if we draw Leeds in the semis?
What if Rafa chooses to start a very in-form Dwight Gayle over a fairly inconsistent Aleksandar Mitrovic?
These are only possibilities of course…but this is what confidence brings.
And a little confidence, in the hands of a Newcastle fan, can be a dangerous thing.
Last month, after we were beaten by Wolves in the league, only to beat them three days later in the cup, I said that we’d got it the wrong way round. I said that we should be focusing on the league. I said that this season, we should sacrifice the cups, as they could harm our chances of promotion, which is surely the ultimate aim for this squad.
Today, I think I was wrong. I know. How quickly has my tune changed?
I look at a team full of pomp and vigour, bursting forward with energy and without fear. They looked like scoring each time they pushed on and almost 50,000 passionate fans behind them believed they could too.
I argue with myself that, although a cup run is brilliant, promotion is vital. That, even though we need to be back in the Premier League, the slightest chance of silverware should not be dismissed. Round and round in circles.
Then, I look at the bigger picture.
Since relegation, Rafa has built a squad. He has almost doubled up on every position on the pitch – and why not? A season is a marathon, not a sprint. He’ll need to be able to call on players at any time, whether it is for the league or the cups.
He has also built a belief. This is something Newcastle fans have been longing for, for a little while now. A pride in the team they support. A knowledge that those eleven players are playing for them.
And I suppose that, if I’m saying anything, I’m saying this – even at this early stage of the season, Rafa Benitez has accomplished something that the last handful of Newcastle managers haven’t. The simple delight in watching this football team of ours win and win well.
I’ll have to hide my hope for the cup run, as well as my expectation for promotion, away for a little while. For now though, if I’m being honest, I’m happy for Newcastle United – its manager, its players and, most importantly, its fans – to be all together, acting like a team.

Fulham Chiropractic Clinic

Fulham Chiropractic Clinic – Anthony Arnott
With life comes aches and pains and, with these niggles, often comes the idea that they are acceptable. It is so easy for things to get in the way and for any throbbing to become part of our daily lives. But, why should we only consider chiropractic therapy to be a serious solution when our agony has reached a serious level?
The experts at Fulham Chiropractic Clinic do not think that this should be the case. They do not recommend to wait until a discomfort develops into a pain or irreparable damage. It is also agreed that age should not be an issue when looking at a person's health and they have provided 5 clues as to when a visit to a professional chiropractor should come earlier than may be expected:

1. The agony in the body is constant
When an ache becomes apparent, supermarket painkillers or a prescription from a local GP do not guarantee an end to the pain.
A visit to a chiropractor, however, will get the body back into shape and will relieve any soreness or tenderness. The specialists at Fulham Chiropractic Clinic know how to realign the musculoskeletal system so that it provides stability and support to the body. The regular pain will end, even if it is not positioned in the person's spine.

2. Regularly sitting for an extended amount of time
When sitting at a desk for hours at a time, pressure is placed on the upper back and a person's posture can also suffer.  Additionally, pains in the joints and muscles can increase through the undertaking of the same physical activities on a daily basis. These could include working at a computer or standing behind a shop counter.
Working within each of these instances can lead to serious problems later on in life, so a 'prevention before cure' approach is advised.
A chiropractor can readjust any parts that are out of place before the pain becomes unbearable.

3. The shoes can be a clue
If shoes are found to be worn down at various rates, it is not always the shoe that is the problem and the source of an ache. Sharpness in the legs could be the result of a slipped disc or a compressed nerve further up the body. A trained chiropractor can focus on particular nerves and relieve any strain by readjusting the spine. In turn, any shooting pain or frailty in the legs should cease.

4. If headaches or migraines are occurring on a regular basis
Headaches and migraines can be fairly regular occurrences. However, if a person is finding that they are suffering on a more frequent basis than usual, a visit to a chiropractic specialist is recommended.
Repeated migraines and headaches could be caused by disjointed parts of the spine, especially in the neck. Since receiving the help of chiropractic professionals, patients have stated that the regularity of their migraines has decreased. Experts, like those at the Fulham Chiropractic Clinic, help their patients with this. They have also noted that the severity of the headaches their patients do get have certainly eased to a manageable level.

5. If the patient lives an active and healthy lifestyle
An active lifestyle keeps a person's body trim and the circulatory system moving at a healthy pace. However, regular exercise can also cause strain or stress on the joints and muscles. This can then lead on to an unattended injury and be the product of a misalignment in the spine.
If the taking part of sports or exercise is part of someone's routine, the likelihood of injury grows. But, with regular physical activity should come regular visits to a chiropractor. They will ensure that any alignment issues do not have an impact on one's active lifestyle. Their methods will also ensure that no spinal problems occur later on in life.

An example of my work. Heel & Toe's Parents' Charter

Heel & Toe Children’s Charity – Parents' Charter
Welcome
Welcome to Heel & Toe Children’s Charity. We provide essential therapy services to children that the NHS cannot currently offer.
We supply FREE Conductive Therapy to any child from birth to 19 years old at our specially designed and adapted centre, based in County Durham.
We understand that the NHS cannot provide sufficient therapy that EVERY child needs and we seek a meaningful solution to your child's requirements.
Heel & Toe Children's Charity provides over 12,000 FREE hours each year with no government funding. After many years of parents requesting additional therapy from us for their children, we established a suite of therapies to help. These services - such as Physiotherapy and Special Educational Tutoring - have to be paid for and, as a charity we are unable to raise it all from our fundraising events and our many other revenue streams.
Presently, we contribute one third of the target from our events programme towards our cause, leaving the remaining two thirds to be funded by parents.
We need to raise over £450,000 each year and can only do this with your help.
In difficult economic times, many parents tell us they need an urgent and long lasting solution but do not know what to do. At Heel & Toe, our Child Event Campaigns provide an answer.
When taking part in charitable campaigns, the money you raise goes directly to your child. This allows you to use the charity as a platform to fundraise professionally and legitimately. You will also benefit from our expert fundraising experience and support to maximise your efforts.
As parents, YOU select whichever campaign you wish to undertake and we hold the money you raise in trust, restricted to help your child and your child only. Funds can help to pay for:
·         Regular and consistent physiotherapy
·         Intensive ‘block’ physiotherapy
·         Hydrotherapy
·         Occupational therapy
·         Outreach service
·         Rebound therapy
·         Special Educational tutoring
·         Speech and Language therapy
Government Giftaid
If you are a tax payer and have provided the correct information, we can - with your consent - claim an additional 25% Giftaid that will help the charity fund our FREE services.
Now here comes the legal bit:
Heel & Toe Children’s Charity receives no funding from the Government. However, we still need to raise over £450,000 each year to offer our free CE and subsidised therapy services, where your child receives up to a third off any additional therapy. At Heel & Toe we have our own annual events, available for any parent to access. In order to provide our core free service, these events have a minimum sponsor amount, with all subsequent funds raised to be allocated to your child’s target.

You can also choose to create your own fundraising event under Heel & Toe. In order for your event to maximise its full potential, we provide the necessary support, with all money raised going directly to your child’s fund.

Any surplus funds generated can - at your request - be transferred and utilised for the general charitable purposes of Heel & Toe. If you do not transfer surplus funds to the charity each year, this money can be saved and used in the new year. Legally, we cannot refund any money to you or your child.

This Parents' Charter describes how Heel & Toe Children’s Charity and parents work together in the best interests of the children. The Trustees reserve the right to update the charter as required.

(After completing some brief details, one of our team will contact you and complete an assessment form. The face-to-face advisement will take around one hour and we aim to assess within an additional 6 weeks.)

For more information please refer to our website:           www.heelandtoe.org.uk

How do I raise funds for Heel & Toe Children’s Charity?

There are so many ways in which you can help raise funds for Heel & Toe. As well as organising your own event, you may call on business support or ask friends, family and work colleagues to participate in an already-existing Heel & Toe event. We can advise and support you throughout, contributing suggestions and even attending an event you organise.

Additionally, we can supply sponsor forms, posters, event tickets and letters requesting event prizes. These can all be tailored to the needs of your specific event.

Collecting donations online

We at Heel & Toe prefer to use Virgin Money Giving as their charges are the most economical, so more money is given to your child and the charity. Just Giving is also available.

You may use as many pages as you require and we can help you set them up, should you need assistance.

What happens to the funds I raise?

Heel & Toe Children’s Charity receives no Government or NHS funding and therefore we need to raise all costs of providing our services to your child. Our costs are funded by: applying to private grant funders, donations from businesses, selling merchandise, bag packing and many other fundraising strategies. However, each year we need to raise around £180,000 – around 40% is generated from events. Without your support we are unable to provide our essential services.

At the start of each month we will provide you with a statement, showing your balance. You will be able to add any money that is donated or raised throughout the month, and for any therapy your child has received, money will be discounted.
The only services you pay for is what your child requires in addition to Conductive therapy, such  as Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Special Needs Tutoring.

If you choose to organise your own event, all funds raised can be allocated to your child’s account at the charity.

If you participate in a Heel & Toe event, a minimum sponsorship amount is set – this covers the cost of the event and a contribution to the charity's core running costs. All money raised over the minimum amount is allocated to your child’s fund.

What do we pay for?

The funds raised for your child’s benefit belong to the charity, but it can be used for any service the charity provides, including - among others - Physiotherapy, Special Needs Tutoring, Block Intensive Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy.

How long can I fundraise for?

There is no time limit, however the charity can only support children up to the age of 19. If, for any reason, your child leaves the charity, the fund balance becomes unrestricted funds of Heel & Toe.

Parents' responsibility?

Heel & Toe act professionally at all times and we expect you, as parents, to respect the rules of our organisation. You must sign and agree to abide by these rules. We expect you to notify us if you and your child are to be late or are unable to attend sessions. Sessions cost the charity on average £30 per hour and therefore, each time a session is lost, it cannot be offered to another child who may be on our waiting list. Please inform us if you and your child are to be late or will be unable to attend a session.

Heel & Toe Children's Charity reserves the right to discharge a child at any time.

Thursday 27 October 2016

This is the first blog I have posted in quite a while.

This month, I have picked up a bit of experience as a copywriter and I'm looking to use this blog as a way of showcasing that work.

The first piece of work is through Heel & Toe Children's Charity, where I was asked to revise and re-tune their Parents' Charter, as well as a few Children's Profiles:

http://www.heelandtoe.org.uk/

It is a brilliant feeling to have done some work for this wonderful charity and I do hope that it won't be the last time I work with them.

In all honesty, I have used the splatter-gun approach in getting in touch with lots of charities, offering my copywriting services, should they be needed. It is all in the aid of gaining experience, but it is incredibly rewarding to have worked with lovely people.

If you are in need of someone to write copy for your website or blog, as well as any press releases or articles, please do not hesitate to get in touch: arnottfirst@gmail.com

I'm offering to do this for free until I'm good enough to charge for my work.

Thank you and ciao for now.

Just support the team

Forget the statistics. Statistics are for commentators and pundits, of which we are neither. I am fed up of people spouting out stats with authority. That’s not our job.

Our job, as supporters, is to support.

Alan Pardew is a man who carries himself with a certain dignity. Now, I know some people will strongly disagree with that statement, but, with all the hatred piled his way, it must take a certain kind of person to still applaud the fans at the beginning of a match, despite him being acutely aware of the protests some of them are making against him.

He has an owner who lets him hang in public (anger and all), he has a public (the fans), who is gunning for him and attacking him at every opportunity and a set of players who have not come out to the fans and apologised for their dismal performances, especially the one against Southampton. Whether Pardew and his coaching staff have told the players not to speak out, I do not know, but, I would not be surprised. In his interviews, the manager has taken the pressure off the players. However, some would argue that this could be his undoing, by letting them get away with too many poor displays.

As for the protests against Pardew, they appeared as futile as the ideas behind them. The real villain of the piece, in my opinion and for reasons I have already stated in this blog, is Mike Ashley.

And herein lies the dilemma for Newcastle fans:

Mike Ashley is a businessman, not a football man. In order to hurt him, we have to hit him in the pocket and to not attend matches or to buy shirts. But, NUFC fans are a proud lot and will never miss the opportunity to see their heroes play and so, will pay to see matches and will buy their shirts with pride. And on and on we’ll go.

Can we talk about football now?

The match against Hull showed the Jekyll and Hyde sides of Newcastle United. Good build-up play with flat finishes in the first half, before two good strikes put us two down. The roar and the passion of the fans driving the team towards a climax that Papiss Cisse has come to know quite well in his time on Tyneside.

Two goals in the last twenty minutes, along with a respectful dedication to Jonas Gutierrez (who, this week, it was announced was fighting testicular cancer), shows that Cisse, despite his frequent goal droughts, has bought into Newcastle United. At the moment, he is probably the closest we can get to having a fan on the pitch.

Hopefully, his two goals against Hull City will spark a resurgence in his, and the team’s, form. No disrespect to Riviere, but, with an experienced spearhead that can capitalise on the efforts of Cabella, Sissoko, Colback and Goufrann, Newcastle could soon be heading in the right direction.
